Teaching and Learning in the Digital World
In search of the best use for digital media within the classroom
Reflection
Throughout the course of this assessment, whilst covering the topics of Transmedia, Cyberbullying and the Digital Divide, many digital tools were incorporated into my website to enhance the digital experience. The digital tools I used in this project included Wix as the primary website editor, Microsoft Word for planning and researching the topics included in this assignment, Curtin’s online digital library for gathering relevant resources to support my ideas, Prezi for the creation of a visual summary of Transmedia and Anchor for the creation of an auditory podcast. Padlet was also used during my research as provided by my course tutor and Youtube for inserting various videos throughout the assessment.
I found my experiences with each digital tool varied greatly. Certain applications such as Youtube, Microsoft Word and Anchor provided a great seamless online experience, void of any glitching or problems that slowed my productivity. Wix and Prezi however would freeze occasionally and sometimes be complicated to communicate your ideas smoothly without the digital aspect interfering. For example, Prezi on occasion would close and I would have to re-open my task in a separate browser for it to function correctly. Wix was a complicated tool that took some practice to understand all the separate functions, and required me to connect a mouse to my computer for ease of application manipulation as I found the commands difficult with just the touchpad connected to my laptop.
I discovered through this task that digital tools, when they work effectively, save users time in creating documents that are visually appealing and interesting to engage with. The creation of the Website incorporating a range of programs also increased my personal understanding of useful digital tools for assignments (particularly creative one’s such as this). This assists me in creating my own digital pedagogy for my experience as a Secondary Education teacher.
As in Howell (2012) a digital pedagogy is built by teachers surrounding digital tools which involve the aspects of creative play, experimental activity and purposeful activity within the classroom. Through this assignment and learning about the useful functions of different digital tools, I can implement my own digital pedagogy within the classroom effectively and in line with the ICT outlines of the school curriculum (k10outline—K-10 Outline, 2020)
